Chillicothe Blasts Rex in Terre Haute, 15-5
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Chillicothe Paints, presented by CohenOrthopedic, scored multiple first-inning runs for the fourth consecutive game in a 15-5 win over the Rex in Terre Haute Saturday night.
With Samuel Meyer at second base and one out, Tripp Johns hit the first Paints' home run of the season (104 mph exit velocity, 369' via Trackman Baseball), giving the Paints (4-1) an early 2-0 lead.
Chillicothe made it four-nothing with another pair of runs in third, scoring on an RBI single by Meyer and a sacrifice fly from Johns.
Johns knocked in his fourth run of the game in the fifth, singling home Meyer and making it 5-0 Chillicothe.
Terre Haute (1-4) took advantage of back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the fifth, scoring both on an RBI single by Joseph Gutierrez and and a sacrifice fly by Carter Murphy. With the bases loaded, Paints releif pitcher Ashton Wolfe struck out 2025 Prospect League Player of the Year Wally Diaz looking to end the inning, keeping the Paints in front 5-2.
The Paints answered immediately in the top of the sixth. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Gabe Pitts singled and grabbed his fourth stolen base of the game. Justin Gorski walked and Meyer doubled, scoring Pitts and Gorski. Alex Bemis followed with a double of his own, scoring Meyer and giving the Paints an 8-2 advantage.
The Paints added six more in the eighth on RBI hits from Jude Clough, Michael Simone and Carter Hire. Gorski plated a run with an RBI walk and the Paints led 14-2.
The Rex got an RBI single from Diaz in the bottom of the eighth, folowed by an infield single from Gutierrez and Darluin Ferreira was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, making it a three-run inning for the REX and cutting it to a nine-run game at 14-5.
Chillicothe added a run in the ninth on Simone's RBI single, making it 15-5, the eventual final score.
Isaac Bellamy started for the Paints, allowing two runs on three hits, walking five and striking out four over 4.1 innings. Wolfe (1-0) earned the win in releif, giving up three runs on four hits, walking two and striking out one in 3.2 innings. Brady Armstrong threw a scoreless ninth for Chillicothe.
Nine different Chillicothe batters recorded at least one hit. Meyer led the way with a 3-for-5 night and three stolen bases, three RBIs and five runs scored. Johns led the team with four RBIs, going 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and two runs scored. Simone went 2-for-five with a pair of RBIs. Bemis also had two hits in a 2-for-five effort, driving in one. Gabe Pitts went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases and two runs scored. Gorski, Jude Clough, Mitchel Szymczak, Carter Hire had one hit each.

After an off day Monday, Chillicothe returns home to VA Memorial Stadium Tuesday to play Johnstown at 7:05 p.m. on Ross County Sheriff's D.A.R.E. Night & School's Out Party.
