Paints Take Opener In Johnstown, 9-4
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - On a cold and rainy night in Johnstown, the Chillicothe Paints, presented by CohenOrthopedic, opened the 2025 Prospect League season with a 9-4 win over the Mill Rats, never trailing in the game.
Chillicothe (1-0) opened the scoring in the top of the third, scoring without a hit after Cam Gravelle walked, stole second and third, then scored on a wild pitch.
Johnstown (0-1) answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, thanks to a Colton Ayres double and Cooper Rasmussen's RBI single, tying the game at 1-1 after three.
The Paints made it 5-1 in the fifth after scoring four times on two hits, three walks and two errors. Johsntown, again, answered with three in the bottom of the inning to bring it back to a one-run game at 5-4.
Zane Vitense reached on a hit-by-pitch to lead off the sixth, advanced on a wild pitch, went to third on a flyout and scored on a play where another runner was caught stealing, making it 6-4.
With one out in the top of the eighth, Vitense singled and Micah Geise was hit by a pitch, putting two runners on. Alex Bemis then hit a ball over the 60-foot net in left field for a three-run home run, extending the Paints' lead to 9-4.
Matt Moscarino started on the mound and threw four innings while allowing one run on four hits and striking out four. Kale Wemer followed, allowing three runs, two earned, and striking out one over one inning of work. Branin Siebert (1-0) struck out five over two innings of relief, not allowing a run and earning the win. Trent Hedges closed out the game with two scoreless innings, striking out four and allowing two hits. The four pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts.
Gravelle (5), Bemis (2), CJ Richmond (1), Mason McManus (1), Zack Henderson (1), Vitense (1) and Geise (1) combined to steal 12 bases for the Paints.
Bemis led the Paints with three RBIs, while Richmond and McManus each drove in one.
